With Manny out and Jason in, Boston is going to see a very different individual in Left Field. Early reports on the trade have experts calling it, “The most lopsided trade in MLB history”. Now while other “authorities” can use such Bill Walton like comments, we here at the Sportsblahg want to accurately evaluate the trade and what Boston will no longer get out of its Left Field position. Okay it is clear that the up and down and sideways marriage between the Boston Red Sox and Manny Ramirez is coming to an end due to the Red Sox inability to understand his silent beauty. The butterfly must leave the cocoon at some point. So Manny won’t block a trade and it appears he’s open to pretty much anywhere being his destination. Here are some outside-the-box suggestions to Theo Epstein, the Red Sox GM, on where he could send Manny:

As we crawl towards the midway point of the summer, we are approaching one of the quieter points in the American sports calendar. The NBA and NHL have reached their thrilling and unimportant conclusions, respectively, and the NFL and college football talk will not heat up until August no matter what the people at ESPN attempt to do (Next on Sportscenter, John Clayton tells us about what impact Adam Jones dropping the nickname “Pacman” will have on his career. Later on Outside the Lines, is there a trend of NFL stars moving away from video game nicknames. How will Eli “Luigi” Manning respond?). The British Open is Tigerless. The MLB trade deadline is approaching and so are those Olympics (Equestrian! Water Polo! Gymnastics! Sports that become strangely enthralling only when played by athletes from a small eastern European country!), but July has historically been a slow time for sports in the United States.

For the first time in my fantasy baseball career, I participated in a AL-only style league format. This was quite a new experience for me coming from the entire league format where anyone and everyone is fair game. Now, in this new style, pitchers like Josh Beckett, Josh Beckett, Joba Chamberlain and CC Sabathia go from elite to God-like because of the lack of their NL counterparts. Now, a catcher like Miguel Olivo, is a sought after “talent”, and a guy like Dionner Navaro is a must start. In most mixed leagues, he’s barely a 50-50 start. Read the rest of this entry »

Happy Friday Sportsblahg nation! While I know we are working our way up to “nation” status there’s just something about Friday that gets me juiced up, it could be the fact that Roger Clemens and I hang out on Thursday nights. Regardless we have an exciting new addition to our Sportsblahg staff, since most of you have realized that The Nate is the only one that posts anymore, we decided to go out and recruit ourselves some talent (in honor of the NBA draft). Fortunately we picked better than the Knicks, but then again my 1 year cousin could have made a better selection.
Presenting to you, in his first blog ever, The Slayer. The Slayer is a recent graduate school graduate from the school of redundancies. He is a savy writer with 2 main flaws:
1. He LOVES Boston & Duke WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY too much.
2. He has a ridiculous obsession with the NCAA Men’s Final Four (but not in the gambling way).
We felt these flaws were minuscule compared to the warrants that are out in Chris Carrera’s name. So here he is in his Sportsblahg debut, and as always, enjoy the weekend:
Okay, so I thought it would be valuable for me to add to the massive glut of “Celtics Are Awesome” pieces that are now overwhelming the world’s newspapers, television programs, blogs, jokes on popsicle sticks, pretty much all important forms of media.
I assume that you will be more than excited to read what I have to say (Oh really? You don’t care? Not at all? And what? You would rather be sat on by the Celtics Glen “Big Baby” Davis after he went on a week long Taco Bell-only diet than read more about the Celtics? Really? Wow, Okay, well, you win. Um, I am still going to write about it though. Moving on). Read the rest of this entry »

Today seems like an excellent day to get you caught up on the truly idiotic stories involving athletes in professional sports, for some reason the hump day, just brings out the worst in the sports world:
Terry Bradshaw is an Idiot - No that’s not new news, but it is a recurring theme if you’ve ever watched him (or worse had to listen to him) on FOX’s Sunday NFL Countdown. However, Terry took his stupidity to a new level this week when speaking on the Dan Patrick show openly admitted to using steroids during his time as a player. Fortunately for him there are two kinds of steroids (ones legal and one is not), so he was able to fall back on the “I only took the legal one” defense style. It’s a good defense, but only from the law, not from the judgmental people like myself. Read the rest of this entry »

With the NBA Draft coming up, the Sportsblahg is getting you geared up with a little quiz game. Based on the widely successful “Is It A Gang Symbol” game we played earlier, we will provide you with statistics and you can tell us if we’ve got a STUD or a DUD:
Player #1:
Our First player on the list averaged a measly 16.5 points per game during his college career. Although when you back that up with 12+ rebounds per game, the stats seem to get better, as averaging a double double might. He had a .321 3-point shooting percentage in college, but only a .689 free throw shooting percentage.
You Got A: STUD - You have drafted Mr. Fundamentals himself, Tim Duncan. Leading his team to numerous NBA Championships and a perennial contender, you have a just drafted a player that is going to take your team from zero to hero. Way to go! Read the rest of this entry »

Over the hundreds of thousands of years that sports have been around, there have been moments where innovation has shown through. We at the Sportsblahg feel that a couple of them deserve real praise for the high level of creativity, thoughtfulness and desire to go above and beyond for the world of sports. Today’s product of praise is: Big League Chew

Well it’s officially the first day of summer, and for me here in San Francisco that means record temperatures in the mid-80’s. Which is a wonderful change from the mid-50’s. In honor of the first day of summer we here at the Sportsblahg decided to give you what you want, the boys of summer, doing what they do best.
Enjoy the compilation!

I have been playing in a co-ed softball league now for two years, and if there’s one thing it has taught me, it’s that females are not reliable. Well, at least the females that have been on my team and only in regards to attending games. However, it got me thinking about who I’d bring on to my co-ed team if money, celebrity status and my ineffectiveness to woo females were put aside. I think the list speaks pretty well for itself, but let’s discuss it anyway (order is based on reverse hitting position):
#9 - Jamie Sale:
Apparently according to the Gods of the mini-diamond, the #9 spot is a great spot for a short fast player, and for that we turn to the goddess of the great white north, Jamie Sale. Sure she’s a skater and not a softball player, but her size gives her an advantage at the plate. With a strike zone the size of a 6″ subway sub, she is a perfect fit to get on base and be ready to score when the big guns come up.
